About Mascarade

Mascarade is a 27-month European project  - co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union - blending art, research, and social action. It brings together young people, artists, educators, and professionals from across Europe to explore the transformative power of the mask — a tool for expression, freedom, and connection.

When we wear a mask, we become something else. We give space to what we hide, what we dream, what we do not yet know. The mask becomes a playground. A shield. A mirror. A tool for liberation, expression, and resistance.

In a Europe marked by identity debates, Mascarade uses theatre, masked performance, and digital creation to explore identity, otherness, inclusion, and democratic participation.

 Our goals

  • Develop an innovative artistic methodology using theatre and masks as tools for inclusion and self-expression;

  • Foster European citizenship through shared reflection and storytelling across cultures;

  • Share creative resources (videos, podcasts, game-book, and website) for artists, youth workers, and educators across Europe.

 What we’re creating

  • A participatory research on European identities and the power of performing arts to support social inclusion;

  • An artistic research lab in Lithuania and local workshops with young people in each partner country;

  • A series of podcasts, a playful and pedagogical game-book, and a multilingual web platform to share it all widely.

 A grounded project, turned toward others

Through residencies, performances, roundtables and local events, Mascarade invites us to reshape our stories, to meet across differences, and to make art a powerful force for a more inclusive, democratic and vibrant Europe.
